Children and Families Worker

We are seeking a worker to engage with children and families and to create opportunities to welcome them into our midst.

The Church of the Ascension is a friendly, welcoming church with a passion for loving service to our diverse local community, where people of all ages can experience and be touched by the love of God and receive the spiritual and pastoral support they need. We are seeking to grow in faith and in numbers.

Regular worshippers include a number of Arabic speaking Christians. Congregations at our services generally remain smaller than before the Covid Pandemic although we have welcomed some new worshippers. Our festival services at Christmas and Easter attract larger congregations while several hundred people a week use our two church halls.

Sunday School operates at the 10am service on three Sundays a month to give children the opportunity to learn more about our faith. We only have a small number of children as regular members of our congregation, and we pray for this aspect of our mission to grow.

Messy Church continues to be an important ministry for us, planting seeds of faith in our ‘Messy’ community, guided by the values of being Christ-centred for all ages, creativity, hospitality, and celebration. There were five sessions in 2023, run by a dedicated volunteer team, and attended by an average of 30-35 children and 15-20 adults. We want this post to help us to run Messy Church once a month and to deepen relationships with our ‘Messy’ community.

Organisations serving the needs of children and young people and families from our church halls include the Church of the Ascension Pre School Playgroup and a number of uniformed organisations (rainbows, brownies, beaver, cub and sea scouts). Our Foodbank operates out of the Church Hall every Friday afternoon serving families and others in need. We also have a strong relationship with Hall Green Youth who run ‘Just Chill’, a support group for vulnerable young people, in our church hall.

There is scope for this post to be extended beyond the initial 3 years, but this would be dependent upon further funding becoming available.
